The Land Conservancy (TLC) was formed in 2003 in response to community need for voluntary tools for land conservation. TLC is a land trust, which offers permanent protection of land and its resources for the public benefit. Land trusts are not "trusts" in the legal sense. A land trust holds property and easements to legally establish protections for a given piece of land.

TLC, a division of Southwestern Illinois RC&D, meets the requirements of a qualified 501(c) (3) non-profit conservation organization that can legally hold conservation easements. TLC is active in the counties of Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair and Washington Counties in Illinois, but can hold conservation easements anywhere in the state. TLC has responsibility for monitoring the easements on an annual basis to ensure that the provisions are carried out. Long-term monitoring of the easement requires a commitment of staff for many years, therefore, funding is needed to support this activity in the future.
