Region 1: Confluence of Missouri River
to the Jefferson Barracks Bridge

(Mile 166 - 195) This region contains the American Bottom and is 33% urban or developed land.  The majority of the area has 100-year flood protection from the main levee system.  The region contains a total of 133,060 acres with agriculture being the dominant use at 35% of the region, or 46,470 acres.

Region 2: Jefferson Barracks Bridge
to confluence of Kaskaskia River
(Mile 118 - 166) This region contains a total of 117,700 acres with agriculture being the dominant land use at 66%, or 78,020 acres.  This region had the highest percentage loss of forest from 1800 to 2000.  Almost 34,000 acres, or 68% of the forest land, was converted in this time period.

Region 3: Kaskaskia River to Fountain Bluff
(Mile 85 - 118) This region totals 106,510 acres and contains a number of public restoration projects.  The region is dominated by agriculture at 70% of the land use, or 74,060 acres.  This region currently has the least acreage and percentage of land in wetlands, with 1,850 acres and 2%, respectively.

Region 4: Fountain Bluff to Thebes Gap
(Mile 40 - 85) This region contains a total of 115,540 acres with agriculture being the dominant land use at 45%, or 53,460 acres.  This region contains the largest concentration of public lands and originally contained a high amount of bottomland hardwood forests.  The 1800s Government Land Office survey indicated that 76% of this region, or almost 79,000 acres, was forest land.  The area of Fountain Bluff is not included in the acreages for this region since it is upland and not considered part of the floodplain.

Region 5: Thebes Gap to confluence of Ohio River
and up the Ohio River to Cache River planning area
(Mile 0 - 40) This region has a very wide floodplain and is influenced by the backwaters of the Ohio River.  The region contains 73,220 acres, of which 52% is in agricultural use.  Approximately 22% of the region is in forest land.
