Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation & Development takes a proactive approach towards

Connecting People & Places: With gas prices soaring, it’s more important than ever to provide alternative transportation routes (trails) between residential neighborhoods and destination points, including parks, schools, libraries, entertainment districts, public buildings and shopping centers. Multiple benefits of trails exist, including reducing energy consumption, clean air and benefits to the overall health of residents within the community. Our staff has assisted a number of communities in completing alternative transportation plans, including O’Fallon, Edwardsville and the Collinsville Area Recreation District.

Sustainable Development: Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation & Development has provided significant research and information aimed at encouraging the implementation of  conservation subdivision design into new developments within this region. The organization also promotes the use of low impact development practices as a smarter way to manage stormwater.

Resource Assessments: Utilizing geographic information system (GIS) technology, staff is able to overlay agricultural, cultural and natural resources with planning maps to identify sensitive areas that should be addressed when considering residential or commercial development within an area. GIS can also assist in projecting future stormwater runoff as a result of residential and commercial development. Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation & Development maintains the most complete regional database of geographic information within the region.
