Over the past twenty years the Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation & Development has matured into a leading entity addressing natural resource and environmental concerns within the region. Our staff has become well educated in the issues facing us today, including urban sprawl, water quality and quantity, and planning for outdoor recreational opportunities. In addition, we’ve also taken an aggressive approach towards mitigating long-term impacts to the region, such as the effects of climate change.
We do this because southwestern Illinois offers a wealth of unique and treasured resources, including the Mississippi and Kaskaskia Rivers, sensitive karst terrain, the state’s largest contiguous hardwood bottomland forest and hundreds of thousands of acres of prime farmland. Many generations have placed great value in these resources, dating back as far as the Mississippian culture. We want to ensure that at least a significant portion of these special resources remain for future generations to enjoy.
Open space, clean water, quality fish & wildlife habitat, and an effective park & trail system are quality of life issues that must be addressed concurrently with residential and commercial growth. In fact, actively addressing environmental issues within comprehensive planning processes leads to an improved and strengthened economy for the overall region. This is something that is desirable to all interests.
Corporations and individuals have many choices in their charitable giving. We strongly believe that an investment, either personal or financial, in Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation & Development is an investment in the regions’ future. We address environmentalism and natural resources on a regional basis, as they should be addressed, and focus our attention and investments strictly within southwestern Illinois, where we live, work and play.
