Due in part to its historical industrial base, the St. Louis Metro East region, and the greater St. Louis region in general, has a significant issue with air quality. In particular, fine particulate matter, such as that coming from exhaust smoke, threatens the health of residents within the region. Nationally, Madison County is ranked 12th for people at risk from long term particulate pollution. Statewide, the county is listed as having the highest 24 hour and annual average particulate pollution. Particulate pollution can shorten lives, contribute to heart disease, lung cancer and asthma attacks and interfere with the growth and work of the lungs.
